• Kentucky has the highest number of ATV fatalities in the nation.
• 35% of ATV related deaths involve people less than 16 years of age
• Males are almost 5 times more likely to be injured on an ATV than females
• Nearly one-half of all individuals injured in ATV accidents are under 16 years old
• Over one-half of all individuals injured in an ATV accident did not wear any type of protective equipment

Skateboard Safety Tips

Skateboarding injuries send about 26,000 people to hospital emergency rooms each year. About 1,500 children and adolescents are hospitalized as a result of skateboard injuries. Most hospitalizations involve head injuries, but skateboard accidents run the gamut from bruises and abrasions to sprains, fractures and dislocations to concussions and even death.

Skateboarders can greatly reduce their risk of serious injury by following some simple safety tips.

Biking Rules of the Road

• Always wear a helmet
• Bicycle only in daylight
• Follow the rules of the road:
  • Ride on the right side of the road with traffic
  • Use hand signals

Every 15 Seconds...

Every 15 seconds, someone in the US sustains a brain injury. In Kentucky one in 5 families report they have at least one family member with a brain injury. The only cure for brain injury is prevention.

In the US, the leading causes of brain injury are:

Falls (28%)
Motor vehicle traffic crashes (20%)
Struck by/against (19%) and
Assault (11%)

Blasts are a leading cause of TBI for active duty military personnel in war zones

ATV Tips for Parents

Be a good role model when possible. Be sure to use the equipment yourself when, and if, you ride an ATV.

Maintain dialogue with your children: they often see the extreme sports and may be tempted to copy what they see. Speak to them about safety and the many ways in which they can be hurt on an ATV.
